MSCs 2020 Summer Staycation Ice Show from April 3, 4, and 5, 2020

Mark your calendars! The Markham Skating Club is proud to announce that our bi-annual skating
show, entitled Summer Staycation is taking place April 3,4 and 5, 2020.  Click HERE for the registration/account page.

Plans for the ice show are well underway. The coming season will be an exciting, but busy time as
we plan for what promises to be a fun-filled show for our skaters and families.

In the coming months you’ll hear a lot from the ice show planning committee. Watch for news
about important dates/deadlines, volunteer opportunities, casting announcements, and so much
more. And, of course, if you have any questions about what to expect, feel free to send us an email
at info@markhamskatingclub.com or stop in at the office.

Registration for MSC’s Ice Show 2020 opens online Monday, October 7 at 9:00 am

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about Ice Show:

Who can participate?
Everyone! Skaters at all levels — PreCanSkate, CanSkate, Intermediate, Senior, Advanced, Gold,
Teen/Adult, and PowerSkate — participate in the ice show. And, our families can join too! We
offer a mother/son or father/daughter option for moms and dads who want to lace up! This year we
are inviting alumni to participate as well. The more skaters, the better—we encourage everyone to
register: skaters of all levels, all ages, and all programs are welcome.

How can I help?
The show is produced by volunteers in partnership with our coaches. If you are interested in
helping out, be sure to watch your email this week to sign up for volunteer opportunities. There are
many ways to get involved. Here are a few:

  • Volunteer to help out with props or costumes or accessories
  • Assist with setup and take down during production week
  • Supervise the dressing rooms during production week
  • Help backstage during the show
  • Operate one of the spotlights during the show
  • Find sponsors for the show
  • Help with the snack bar during the show
  • Assist with the program, tickets, or marketing efforts
  • Assist with rehearsal food and snacks

Our show cannot be a success without the help of parents. Whether you have one hour or more
time to support, please consider helping out!

How much does it cost?
Your ice show registration fee includes the rental of your costume(s), two rehearsals per week/ice
show number (court), full week of skating during production week, an ice-show t-shirt, and a group
photo of each ice-show number in which you are cast.

Fees are as follows:

  • CanSkate - $105 (one court)
  • Power Skaters - $105 (one court)
  • Teen/Adult - $105 (one court)
  • Intermediate - $175 (two courts)
  • Senior - $225 (three courts)
  •  Advanced/Silver $270 (three courts, plus one additional feature part or character role)
  • Gold – $ 295 (four courts, plus one additional feature part or character role)
  • Mother/son or Father/daughter - $100/pair (one court)
  • Alumni - $105 (one court)

Please note that admission tickets are not included in the price of registration. Tickets will go on sale in
March. Skaters who skate only in the first half of the show can purchase 2nd half tickets at a
reduced rate.

Do I get to keep my costumes from the show?
No, the costumes are property of the Markham Skating Club. After the show, all of the costumes
featured in the ice show are added to our “Loft” costumes for rental so that our skaters and other
clubs can rent them for the season. We also save then for use in future MSC shows. The revenue
from these rentals helps fund our show, keeps costs manageable and allows us to keep
registration fees down.

How many shows will I be appearing in?
All skaters participate in all four shows:

  • Friday evening at 7:00 PM
  • Saturday matinee at 1:00 PM
  • Saturday evening at 7:00 PM
  • Sunday matinee at 1:00 PM

Please also note that skaters are expected to attend the formal dress rehearsal on Thursday night
at 7:00 PM where we invite local residents from a local nursing homes to attend the show.

Parents wishing to attend any of the show times must purchase a ticket.

How many rehearsals are there and when do they begin?
Rehearsals begin the first week of March. Skaters will be informed of the rehearsal schedule well
in advance of their rehearsals so that families can plan around other programs, commitments, and
vacations. Most (see exceptions below) skaters will attend 2 rehearsals per week for each number
in which they are cast. For example, CanSkaters will attend two rehearsals per week. Senior
skaters who will be cast in three courts will attend 6 rehearsals per week.

Exceptions: Adult/teen, Alumni, and Mother/Son and Father/Daughter courts will have one rehearsal
per week and some groups (opening, closing, and first half closing may have additional rehearsals
scheduled).

The rehearsal schedule will be posted and shared with parents through email in February, 2020.

Will there be any regular sessions during rehearsal week? Can I still schedule private lessons with my coach?
There are no regular sessions during the month of March; however, we will schedule some open
sessions for skaters at the StarSkate (Intermediate, Senior, Advanced, Gold) level to arrange for
private lessons and/or practicing for upcoming tests.

What if I’m planning a vacation in March?
If you are planning a family vacation during March Break (or any other time between March 2 and
April 5), please let us know so we can plan accordingly.

Who should I contact if I have any questions?
To get your questions answered, please contact the office, one of our Board members or you one
of the coaches.
